Northern Quarter residents grow their own vegetable patch in the Piccadilly Basin area of the city centre, as part of Manchester’s first Garden City scheme.

The residents, who have already set to work planting fruit and vegetables in individual wooden grow boxes, are playing their part in making the city greener.

One of the residents and organiser, Joe Weeks, said that the “scheme is as much about creating community spirit as it is about growing fruit and vegetables.”

Funding for the project has come from Manchester City Council and Manchester’s city centre management company, CityCo.

Gary Ellis, Operations Director at CityCo stated that: “The Garden City initiative is all about getting local people involved in making their city greener”
